Let’s talk photography myths. I am here to debunk the top 5 things I have heard as I have come up in the industry.
First, photography myth one: You have to have a REALLY expensive camera. Expensive, doesn’t mean amazing photos. When you are first starting out, you don’t know if you will love this or if this is really where you want to go. Get what you can afford and after a year, you will know more of what you like and can take the time to do the research on what will work best for you. Expensive: Work done for you? – Myth!
Note: Money is best spent on the lens, not necessarily the body.
Second, photography myth two: Nailing down a specific style. You do not need a specific style. You do need to narrow down in some areas. Having dark and moody, to natural light, to traditional…clients should know what they are getting. Sticking to posing styles or what feelings you are trying to evoke matters. Having a signature pose helps you stand out. I like to describe my style as fluid or custom. This way I can meet the needs of my clients.
Third, photography myth three: In order to be successful, you have to have a BIG social media following. I have been very successful as a wedding photographer and have less than 2500 followers (as of this video). I have made a 6 figure business through my work, word of mouth and have not had to feed myself to the social media stress.
Note: Never compromise yourself to the social media frenzy. You can make real money. You can make a good living without a social media hustle.
Finally, photography myth four: Paid advertising is not worth it. I personally disagree with this. The Knot and Wedding Wire have given me a lot of brand recognition. I do get bookings and it has given my brand credibility and boosted my SEO. I also se benefit from Facebook ads. This doesn’t have to be something you spend a lot of money on either.
